This picturesque area, only 1.5 hours from Verona, is
perfect for beginners and we recommend it very highly.
It's a gentle ski area with good progression, pretty
villages and friendly people. Beginners were always well
catered for but now it's great for intermediates too. The
skiing has improved greatly over recent years and
Folgaria now provides much more variety and scope.
System development has been positively frenzied – we
have never known a lift company do so much so
quickly. Pistes have been remodeled, lifts have been
built and more snow cannons and chairlifts seem to
appear every year.
Beginners have sheltered nursery slopes and good snow
at altitude to inspire confidence. Progression is easy and
natural and there are interesting journeys on pretty treelined
runs. Intermediates have an array of well-kept, fairly
amiable blues and reds and quite high mileage of 100km.
The best area, about 60km, is just above Folgaria and
Serrada, and offers open bowl skiing with various runs
through the trees on undulating gentle slopes. Modern
snow-making now covers the whole system and there’s a
new skating rink.
The English speaking ski school is friendly and helpful, as
are all the local suppliers. Overall, Folgaria is notably
good value and a good
place to learn and
develop ski technique.
The village of Folgaria is
quite a long way from the
lifts but it has lots of
atmosphere of the Sud
Tirol variety and is
certainly worth visiting.
The Hotel Monte Maggio
is in Fondo Grande, just
above Folgaria, and is
actually in the ski system
itself at the meeting point
of lifts and pistes. It is in a
quiet area in terms of
après ski but could not be
more conveniently
situated for skiing.
The
Hotel Martinella is in
picturesque Serrada and
is well positioned at the
bottom of the main run
back to the village with a
chairlift just outside.
Village Facts
Folgaria is an alpine gem. With
its onion domed church,
shops and coffee houses, it
recalls the days when the Sud
Tyrol was part of Austria. It
has all the traditional winter
pursuits and always seems to
have a festive, Christmas
atmosphere. It's only 5mins
drive from our hotels and we
certainly suggest at least one
evening for shopping and a
night out.
