If you learnt to ski in Tonale a few years back you will be amazed by the changes. Like all the Val di Sole resorts, investment in the lifts has been continuous and Tonale is definitely on its way up market. Many of the hotels have added a star. High above the trees, it’s still not quite your alpine idyll but there aren't that many buildings over 3 storeys and the original old parts have been extensively restored. With the fairy lights on at night it looks great.
This friendly resort, straddling a pass, has so much to offer - convenience, plenty of easy mileage and guaranteed snow. The many new snow cannons provide further back-up and the permanent snowfields of the Presena glacier can be skied even in August. The scenery has a bleak drama all of its own and it can be cold. So much the better for the snow.
The big network of lifts is modern, efficient and user-friendly, with some moving carpet type chairs, easy even for beginners. There is hardly any walking or queuing. The huge nursery slopes are wide, sunny and gentle and we really can’t think of a better choice for nervous novices. The glacier is reached via a new gondola and the excellent skiing is in a high bowl at over 3000m. When the snow is good the glacier lifts do not open but the run from the top of the cable car is always open. From here there is a truly superb, recently remodelled black, which is a thrilling experience for intermediates and advanced. Beginners can come back by cable car. A superb 4.5km race piste also provides plenty of exhilaration.
There is a magical, snow-sure 7km run through woods to Ponte di Legno, where there is some more excellent skiing, and a new cable car system takes you back up to Tonale. The journey takes you past little farms and a Husky Dog Training School on a lovely forest trail which can be managed by confident snow ploughers.
Ponte di Legno is a beautiful old town with tree-lined runs - a complete contrast to the starkness of Tonale and you will enjoy the slightly more difficult and scenic skiing. You return by free ski bus.
The checking system for the lifts is hands free and so the pass stays in your pocket for the full week (returnable deposit of €5 applies). The pass now includes a reduced charge of €2 for the swimming pool in Ponte di Legno (swimming caps a must).
The terrain at Tonale is great for snowboarders. Tonale is excellent for beginners and great for learning as there are lots of long wide runs which are excellent for practice.
Tonale is a genuine mountain community so it’s nice and friendly and prices are reasonable. Almost everything is there in the village and night life is informal and fun.
A real village with good prices, friendly people and plenty to do. Popular excursions include: Ponte di Legno, Marilleva, Folgarida and M. di Campiglio.
