This elegant old town on a high pass slumbered for generations as a traveller’s rest before becoming a favourite retreat of the Hapsburg nobility. As luck would have it, the adjacent mountains are perfect for skiers.
Beginners are very well served and the ski school operate a free minibus service to the nursery slopes.
Most runs are intermediate but not difficult, the main plan being to ski plenty of miles without too much challenge.
There’s great variety, especially including the Folgarida and Marilleva extension, which is about half the system.
Advanced skiers will enjoy long, sweeping blacks and there’s also a tremendous World Cup Downhill. The lift system and pisting are absolutely first class and investment is continuous. Campiglio caters best for skiers that think about more than just piste bashing. Even beginners can get to marvellous mountain restaurants.
The terrain at Madonna di Campiglio is great for snowboarders.
The village is traditional, photogenic, well equipped and traffic-free. There is a host of bars, shops and those old fashioned cafés with the lethal cream pastries. Overall Campiglio is an attractively eclectic mix of traditional mountain village and ritzy resort.
Very Italian, traditional, attractive and upmarket. Lots of attractions. Spectacular setting. Good for non-skiers.
