Designed in the ‘60s by the famous modernist architect Le Corbusier and named after him, Le Corbier started life as one of those medium sized 3rd generation resorts with 75kms of good skiing. Now though, the pass includes La Toussuire, St Sorlin d’Arves and St Colomban, and is one of the biggest ski areas in France at a whopping 310kms!
The snow record is excellent. The village is at 1550m, the top station is at 2600m, there are plenty of snow cannons. The main thing about any purpose-built resort is the quality of the skiing and this area doesn’t disappoint. The Le Corbier part has exceptional learning slopes, and early intermediates have plenty of easy blues on good snow. Keen intermediates can enjoy enormous runs giving dramatic views and an enjoyable sense of journey. Advanced skiers revel in the huge mileage.
This is an ambitious and rapidly-developing ski area with lifts added every year. Le Corbier has added a fast 6 man chair direct from the foot of the resort right to the top, where there’s a link to St Sorlin and La Toussuire.
La Toussuire is slightly more challenging and there’s about 50kms of great skiing here in an enormous bowl. The route back is deliberately kept easy but beginners can take the chair lift if they wish and there’s also a bus service.
No-one could describe Le Corbier as an eyeful of classic chocolate box charm - no doubt Le Corbusier had something else in mind. However, it’s practical and convenient and works really well. Vehicles park outside the traffic-free village which curves around the foot of the mountain so that the nursery slopes run right up to the wooden terrace. It’s easy to use, well equipped and noticeably friendly. Most of the shops and cafés in the piste-front gallery have been run by the same families since the resort opened.
The terrain at Le Corbier is great for snowboarders. There is a very laid back attitude towards snowboarders and with two snowparks to keep you busy and massive amounts of mileage, Le Corbier is a good place to snowboard. There is a very large number of drags in the Sybelle region so accessibility is also quite good.
Our Hotel Le Mont Corbier is one of the best ClubHotels in the programme and has a brilliant position. The coach drops passengers at the front and the pistes are out the back Everything in the village is a short stroll away and the convenience factor also extends to the airport transfer. From Turin, you can be through the Fréjus tunnel, up the hill and walk in through the front door in 21/2 hours.
There is in-house ski hire, with a resident technician on hand throughout your week.
The warm and friendly atmosphere belies the stark modernity of the resort. There is something organised every week, like tournaments, races and shows. It's convenient, compact and traffic free. Everything is organised within the arcade fronting the slopes. The village is fairly quiet, but friendly and there's "one
of everything".
