La Plagne is very much one of the Tarentaise big hitters, and the fantastic news for those seeking mega mileage is that the link to Les Arcs almost doubles it to a whopping 425kms. It’s also got bomb proof snow security, yawning snow bowls, and pretty little tracks through woods to cobble and stone villages with actual cows! It’s strange to leave a purpose-built ski metropolis like Plagne Centre and eat your lunch in Montchavin, a charming little village with orchards and farmyards.
There are ten villages, most purpose built, some traditional, but all linked up with convenience uppermost. Piste grooming and lifts are first class and queues are surprisingly rare for such a popular resort
La Plagne is definitely an intermediates’ playground and is great for those who want to rack up the kilometres. You’ll get a great sense of journey as you travel between the villages. There are huge motorway blues and gentle runs through trees, useful when the weather closes in. There are acres of smooth, gentle slopes for beginners and loads of easy blues to help you find your snow legs. Although there are a few tough blacks, experts will find the best skiing off-piste and we highly recommend hiring a local guide. The glacier is also good fun. Most glaciers are flat - not this one.
La Plagne invests constantly in new lifts, and none are more impressive than the astonishing double-deck cable car, the Vanoise Express, which at 12.5m per second, takes only 4mins from Montchavin to Peisey (Les Arcs). This is a fantastic lift, definitely worth taking for the experience alone!
La Plagne ski resort is fully equipped for snowboarders, with three excellent snowpark's (in Bellecôte, Montchavin and Champagny en Vanois)e and 3 boardercross circuits, there's so much variety for even the keenest snowboarders.
In La Plagne Centre, the snowpark is on the la Capella piste. The Colorado, Funiplagne gives you access to a huge area with 20 different modules and 4 circuits.
The Snowpark of Champagny en Vanoise is just off La Rossa chairlift. The park has so much on offer and lots of variety that is suited to everyone from beginners, amateur to expert. There is a barbecue site and picnic tables that are maintained daily. Freestyle and Boardercross competitions are held here regularly.
At Bellecôte there is a halfpipe that lays between the pine trees with numerous handrails and jumps which is challenging for all abilities.
The Snowpark of Montchavin is a great place for groups as it consists of various sections which cater for many different snowboarding abilities.
Plagne 1800 is a nicely built, modern resort with convenience to the fore. The low-rise wood clad buildings are built on the human scale in traditional Savoyard style. There are a few shops, 2 or 3 restaurants and a couple of cafés/bars. This friendly village is fairly quiet so you do need Plagne Centre for livelier nightlife and more shops. Although it’s only a short distance as the crow flies, it takes 15mins or so to walk, but there’s a very good free bus service circulating constantly until 00.15. After that, the bars operate a mini-bus service for late night revellers until 04.00.
Plagne Centre, the essential hub of the ski area and main focal point for après ski and nightlife. Located just a few minutes by funiplagne from the top of the Grande Rochette, it is at the heart of the system. Access to the skiing is first class with lifts radiating to all sides of the enormous bowl.
La Plagne 1800 is quite small, but has a few bars, shops and cafés. The list below shows what is available between all the satellite villages of La Plagne.
