With its massive linked 'Ski Circus', traditional Austrian charm and plentiful après ski, Saalbach is arguably the ideal ski resort. This is easily the biggest linked ski area in Austria and it has fantastic variety for every ability. Unlike most Austrian ski systems, this is a “Ski-Circus”, you can ski around the whole valley without any walking or bussing, although at over 200km it’s a tall order.
The modern lift system now with 55 lifts develops every year and is as good as any you will find in France. Three lifts have recently been upgraded including a gondola in Hinterglemm and a 6 seater chair lift with heated seats. The powerful snowmaking helps conditions generally but many slopes are north facing so skiing on this circuit is reliable from the beginning to the end of the season.
This is one of the finest circuits in Europe and has every variety of run. It’s best known for the sunny cruises of Saalbach but the north-facing slopes of Hinterglemm, as well as giving enviable snow security, also provide some exhilarating moguls and steep blacks, so advanced skiers, like everyone else, have plenty to ski. For beginners, there are plenty of long blues on the whole circuit and good nursery slopes in Hinterglemm. Intermediates have a massive choice of sunny cruising, ski tours and glorious, long runs through trees. Good skiers with thighs of steel can probably do the whole circuit in a day, but it’s a challenge!
Saalbach is top for snowboarders, with fun parks, wonderful off-piste and a sympathetic lift system.
There is a fantastic array of mountain restaurants: big ones, booming with bonhomie and loud music; cosy log cabins with traditional costume; and some that simply serve terrific food. Quite a few are accessible to non-skiers.
Saalbach is big and lively, but still has great charm, a safe, car-free centre, plenty of après ski and all the traditional Austrian attractions. All in all, we would say Saalbach has a good claim to being one of the premier ski resorts in Austria.
A wonderful area with lots to do, good non-ski facilities and lively après ski. Loads of bars and pubs covering the full spectrum from oompah-band traditional to nightclub contemporary. Both villages are typically Austrian. Saalbach for glamour, Hinterglemm for charm.
