This quiet, unspoilt area is a true alpine gem. Situated very close to Obertauern and the Tauern Pass and is well known all over Austria for reliable snow. This is officially the coldest but also the sunniest part of Austria. The snow comes from both the north and the south so this resort gets double the chance of a good snowfall.
This is an attractive area with endless blue and red runs. The pass covers nearly 150kms broken down into three areas of roughly equal size all connected by ski bus which is free with the lift pass. The Speiereck/Grosseck, above St Michael and Mauterndorf, is uncrowded, spacious and distinguished by enormous 9 and 10kms runs – perfect for cruising. Beginners have a local nursery slope just 5 minutes from our hotel and can then take the long chairlift all the way to the top station where there’s good snow and a nursery run. The return run to the resort has been modernised and a new 13km blue run means that everyone can now ski back down at the end of the day. There are plenty of undulating blue slopes here offering good progression and these beautiful long runs suit every ability.
Intermediates have great skiing on interesting runs through pretty scenery and sheltered woods. Advanced skiers have massive mileage, some terrific off-piste and the challenge of the other areas on the skipass.
The Katschberg/Aineck is linked by ski bus in about 10 minutes and Fanningberg is reached by skibus in about 25 minutes. This is a lovely ski area, much prized by our staff and is well worth a day out. Finally, as an extension, Obertauern is only 30 minutes by ski bus.
Obertauern is one of the best known ski resorts in Austria and is where they filmed the ski sequences in the Beatles film ‘Help’. It offers a great variety of runs and the possibility of skiing all around the bowl that encompasses the village. Some superb off-piste trails can also be found here and we organise trips most weeks.
The terrain at S tMichael is great for snowboarders.
St Michael is a beautiful village, typically Austrian and totally unspoilt. Amongst its quaint old buildings and narrow streets there are plenty of shops, atmospheric bars and enticing cafés with old fashioned pastries. Nearby Mauterndorf is a ravishing village, one of the prettiest in Salzburgerland, and has been established since Roman times. It has a 13th century castle, good shops and a fascinating historic centre. All the buildings are painted in warm, harmonious colours and have steep gables and decorative murals.
Lovely little Austrian village, totally authentic, with old buildings and cobbled, narrow streets.
