Mayrhofen has long earned its place as one of the world’s top ski resorts with 174 lifts and 636kms of awesome skiing this is easily Austria’s biggest pass. One definite highlight is the famous Hara Kiri run which is the steepest prepared piste in the world and only for the brave. Mayrhofen also has the massive Ahornbahn gondola, the largest in Austria, which can carry 160 people at a time.
Jumbo gondolas, gargantuan cable cars at altitude and covered chairs have done a lot to reduce the infamous Mayrhofen queues, and powerful snowmaking keeps everything in good shape. There’s tremendous variety for everyone, even experts and off-piste fans. Mayrhofen alone offers a whopping 157kms of piste with more than enough for most people.
Above Mayrhofen, the Penken-Horberg offers mostly intermediate skiing with tree runs, smooth cruises and some tricky stuff above the tree line on great snow. Mayrhofen also has the separate Ahorn which is almost entirely devoted to beginners. Here there’s uncrowded, high nursery areas on good snow and the gentle confidence inspiring rounded hills are great for learning.
Although there is plenty of local skiing, it’s definitely worth using the superb, free transport system to access other ski areas and villages. One of Mayrhofen’s big plus points is that outlying hamlets have been incorporated into the ski area branded as Zillertal 3000, making it the largest complex in the valley. In addition the massive Hintertux glacier is only 30 minutes away so regardless of conditions you are guaranteed somewhere to ski. It’s included on the pass and there’s over 90kms with loads of choice which is very rare for a glacier.
Snowboarders have a great time here thanks to the Burton Park, (situated in Horberg-Hochtal in the Penken area) which is regularly voted one of the best in Europe and many Austrian/International pro-riders can regularly be seen here. There is a 150m half-pipe as well as a huge variety of jumps and rails. The park is served by a dedicated four-person chair.
Although still a traditional Alpine village with chocolate box charm, Mayrhofen is also one of the most popular winter resorts in Austria. All the traditional winter pastimes are here including horse-drawn sleigh rides, tobogganing and skating. There are also a number of cafés/cake shops to enjoy as well as some good local restaurants including the famous Mayrhofen mountain restaurants which are fantastic. Mayrhofen is also particularly well known for its après ski and there are loads of lively pubs and clubs for those who want to party all night. The Ice Bar at the bottom of the Penken, is roaring after the lifts close and you need special discipline to leave on time for dinner.
Very lively, fantastic Tyrolean entertainment and a huge range of Après ski activities.
